Run:
xfce4-mouse-settings
...in a terminal window and post back the results.

They all give this error
librarian@Gateway:~$ xfce4-mouse-settings

Are you running this through vnc or rdesktop? Connecting remotely?
If so, this was an issue before but I thought it was fixed. What version of xfce4-settings is installed?
apt-cache policy xfce4-settings

This must be through some sort of remote connection. Are you using vnc or rdp? Does it work when you are directly accessing the laptop?

Yes it happens remotely and locally. The output I sent was from a local test. Is there a way to just reinstall the mouse and touchpad part? This is on several HP G72t laptops that were fine until the upgrade from 14.04 to 16.04.

I just tested my Xubuntu 16.04 install, and am getting the same error when connecting remotely (and I also remember this working in 14.04). However, I do not get this error when connecting locally.

I don't think that will help. I have a feeling that its an issue with vnc and/or xfsettingsd. You should probably create a bug report at launchpad.

it's not vnc as it occurs when not connecting remotely (right at the laptops ) on several. What is weird is we have 10 identical laptops and it occurs on about 4 of them.
