no icons & secondary desktop everywhere

Hi!

I was using both built-in laptop display and external one (mirroring), then put computer to sleep, disconnected my external display and now my desktop behaves like secondary one: no icons, no way to change the wallpaper on built-in display. The panels are still present and functional, though.

I have tried connecting and turning on/off both displays in system settings, changing appearance and icons but none of the displays (even when I connect external one again) can be set as primary and made to show icons and wallpaper

BUT: if I startx in other console, it starts perfectly well with primary desktop as it should (and did before)

Also, xrandr shows nothing wrong.

I am on Debian 8 using XFCE with latest stable updates, being exemplary noob.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!
