Can't suspend laptop under xfce

I'm using Ubuntu 14.04, and recently switched to xfce from Unity.  Now, however, I can't seem to suspend the computer.  Clicking "Suspend" in the power manager menu only locks the screen, as does

xfce4-session-logout --suspend

However, if I change the power manager settings so that the computer should sleep when inactive, and then leave the computer alone for the specified amount of time, it sleeps as expected.  That said, I still want to find a way to suspend the computer manually.

Does anyone know what could be causing this problem?
