Xfce4 Desktop getting stuck (not responding)

The Xfce4 desktop is not responding all of a sudden. This is happening every day. The keyboard, mouse both are getting stuck. Neither does the mouse pointer moves nor does the keyboard work.

But, when an application is running currently, say a Music player playing a playlist it automatically plays the next file. The applications are running well.

How to get out of this problem? Is it a bug? Tried,

Ctrl+Alt+F1
xfwm4 --replace
systemctl restart mdm

But still, didn't work. In the above, when

xfwm4 --replace

is executed, there is a warning Cannot open display
So, tried using normal terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T), and

There there is an error called .gtk-rc-2.0:1:error: Unexpected character '\342'

For this, I replaced the char with normal "", so no error.

But, after thar when the xfwm4 --replace exected from normal terminal, then..

Waiting for current window manager (Xfwm4) on screen :0.0 to exit: Done

and it is waiting and waiting but no result.

Re: Xfce4 Desktop getting stuck (not responding)

Hello and welcome.

It sounds like your X Window environment is hung. Are you doing the same thing when it happens (i.e. do you know what might cause it, like an action on your part or a series of events)?

Can you also try creating a second user account and login with that account. See it the same happens under the second account. If not, it might indicate something is wrong with your profile.

As for your other questions, you can't run xfwm4 in a console (Ctr+Alt+F1) because it needs an XWindows display to work. And when you run it in the terminal, the "Done" indicates that it has been restarted.

You might also want to review your Xorg.0.log file to see if any error messages are present when this happens.

Re: Xfce4 Desktop getting stuck (not responding)

There are no specific events that can be mentioned. It seems to get hung without any reason, all of sudden, even when no action is being performed through the mouse or keyboard.

Does a reinstall do good? Is it due to the theme. After the above theme file is corrected, there was no hung till date. Will see some days, if it occurs then will post the Xorg.0.log file

Here is the Xorg.0.log, this time it got stuck. when it got stuck, I rebooted the system and then this is the log file that was after reboot.
This time, the stuck happened in a different way, the mouse is able to move but not able to click anything, not able to type anything, even the hover effect on the panel items also didn't fire any event.

Here is the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file. http://pastebin.com/SsPqTYpE.

When you restart X, it copies over its old log file to Xorg.0.log.old and starts a new one. The "old" file is the one that might have some info about the hangup.

Also check your ~/.cache/upstart/startxfce4.log file, I think it might also get renamed to *.old or *.0/1 on reboot.

Re: Xfce4 Desktop getting stuck (not responding)

From your Xorg.0.log.old file:

(EE) [mi] EQ overflowing. Additional events will be discarded until existing events are processed.

Your Xserver is crashing most probably because of an issue with your video card (not Xfce related).

A google search on that string brings up a number of hits, bug reports and suggested fixes. A common suggestion seems to be to switch the video card acceleration method away from SNA to EXA (or UXA).

How do I switch to EXA (or UXA)?

Re: Xfce4 Desktop getting stuck (not responding)

If the file /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf doesn't exist, create it (you will need root privileges). Add/edit so that it contains at least the following information:

Section "Device"
   Identifier "Intel Graphics"
   Driver "intel"
   Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
EndSection

Log out and back in again to test. To verify that you are using UXA mode, check your Xorg.0.log file.

Done. I will see if this solves the problem. However, my Intel driver

Installed: 2:2.99.917+git20160325-1ubuntu1

it is above 2.20 to support SNA. It supports SNA and the RAM is also 2 GB (fairly enough for smooth performance of Xfce 32 bit), I have disabled Compositing also.

Also, during the time it gets stuck, the no. of programs used are also pretty much less, it got stuck even if only the lightweight DeadBeef player is opened.

Could there be any other cause for this problem other than SNA? Because, SNA is said to be faster and better than other methods.

It's quote possible, yes. I suggested the UXA/EXA workaround because it was noted a few times in the google hits and its an easy thing to test. If the problem persists, you may wish to create a launchpad bug report about it.
