So I have xfce 4.12 installed in a Linux Mint 17.3 and I have this recurring problem that shortcuts go missing from the app finder. This happens to either apps installed through a .deb package and to shortcuts created manually in /usr/share/applications. Sometimes they come back after a PC restart, sometimes it makes them go missing, I couldn't tell a proper pattern to be honest.
Here's a screenshot for example: http://i.imgur.com/tMC5cbd.png
Any help is appreciated!

Hello and welcome.
I notice sometimes that when applications get updated, they disappear from my favourites list. But only some applications. Can't say I can replicate this particular issue.
What version of xfce4-appfinder is included with Mint 17.3?
Also, what options do you have selected?
xfconf-query -c xfce4-appfinder -lv

It was not included in Mint, I have installed it on my own. I am a rookie in Linux, I was looking for a better replacement for Cinnamon and ended up chosing xfce. I'm really liking it.
I'm pretty sure it's not related to updates - none of the apps that I notice go missing have been asked to update nor they showed up in Update Manager.
Here is the return of that command:
/actions <<UNSUPPORTED>>
/actions/action-1/command exo-open \0
/actions/action-1/pattern ^(file|http|https):\/\/(.*)$
/actions/action-1/save false
/actions/action-1/type 1
/actions/action-2/command exo-open --launch TerminalEmulator %s
/actions/action-2/pattern !
/actions/action-2/save true
/actions/action-2/type 0
/actions/action-3/command exo-open --launch WebBrowser http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%s

How did you install it? If you built it from source, what configure/autogen.sh command did you use and what is the output when you run that command?

Can you try running it with service mode enabled? Go to the appfinder preferences and select "Keep running instance in background". If it is already checked, un-check and check it again. To confirm that it is selected, this command should also return:
/enable-service true

That's odd - I am currently in a Mint 17 environment and Application Finder is the first entry in my applications menu under "Accessories." I might have installed it myself, but I would tend to doubt it because I really have no use for it. Did you install the Xfce flavor of Mint, or did you install one that had a different DE and then add Xfce to it?
I suppose it is possible that Clem inadvertently left it out of the 17.3 version of Mint Xfce. I thought I had the Mint Xfce 17.3 .ISO in my /boot/grml directory so that I could select it from my grub menu and boot into it, but I was wrong (I must have gotten my other partition to 17.3 by upgrading 17.1) - I only have 17.1 and 18 (both Xfce, of course) in it.
It is also possible that Application Finder was automatically installed when I chose something else, such as the Xfce goodies (meta?)package. IDK.
I had assumed, though, that it was a standard Xfce component, sort of like Xfwm and Thunar. Maybe I was wrong and it's one of those optional add-ons.
Now I am curious, lol. I am going to restart my computer and select the Mint 18 .ISO entry in my grub menu so I can boot into that live environment and check to see if it includes Application Finder. EDIT: Yes, it is in Mint 18 Xfce, too (and, doggone it, I still cannot figure out how to switch categories in the Whisper menu without using the mouse device. I know, wrong thread...)
Regards,
MDM

I have installed xfce4 through apt-get - after installing a bunch of other packages that it was demanding necessary to run. The Application Finder was included in xfce4 the first time I log on it, I didn't have to install it explicitly.

I did as you described and now I see this value.

Are app icons still disappearing?
