Distribution Choice.

Hi smile

So first, a bit of history of my Desktop / Laptop operating system usage...
- I was using Debian a long time ago... Stopped around 2005 and switched to Mac OSX.
- Then around 2 years ago I decided to go back to Linux, and I tried Xubuntu.

I was very surprised (In a positive way) because it was completely different from my past experience:
- I had very few driver issues (I remember recompiling my kernel, compiling the NVidia drivers back in the days...).
- The PPAs! All those nice edgy packages of all the software I like was available without any problem.

Now I like Xubuntu but I would like a bit more granulosity at installation (Eg less stuff put on my disk). So I would like to have your suggestions regarding the distros on which XFCE is available. What distros are you using?

Thanks!
Doodloo.

Re: Distribution Choice.

There is a list in Wikipedia that looks reasonably complete and up-to-date. I use the one in my sig, where Xfce is the default.

Re: Distribution Choice.

Hello and thank you Jerry,

Didn't know about that one, nice!
How close to unstable is M-15? Is it safe to consider relativelly recent versions to be available in M-15?

It is based on Stable, but we backport a great deal, whether through Debian Backports (for which we have a dedicated tool now) or directly by our packagers out of whatever is upstream that works and does not interfere with Stable.

Reviews here: www.mepiscommunity.org/reviews/

If you are interested in looking at it, best to take the most recent monthly update as it will save a lot of downloading. MX-16 is now in development, release in early December.

Can you use PPAs with MX-##?

Re: Distribution Choice.

Sometimes, but often not directly--just like with Debian, upon which we are based.

When we do want to bring something into our own repos, our packagers check the setup to see what Ubu-specific stuff is in there and look to see if it can be changed.

Does that mean that a user may have success in suggesting a newer version of an application - or an application which is not currently present in your repos - be added? I am not thinking of anything, specifically, this is just a general question from a prospective (someday; the discovery of failing hardware is probably not the time to try out a new distro roll ) user.

Happens all the time: it's one of our great features. We now post the more interesting of those ongoing updates in our Twitter account @MX_Linux, so you can check it out.
