Buttons 8 and 9 detected by xev but not doing anything in chrome

... and thunar.

xfce as implemented in xubuntu, running on a virtual machine (vmware).
Any idea why this is happening?

I did this aready. And now xev does see the buttons, but not xfce.

Workarounds?

What are you expecting will happen with a button 8 or 9 press in thunar? What are you trying to accomplish?
