xfce with metacity focusing issues

Anybody tried using metacity with xfce? All works well but I am experiencing a focusing issue with Whisker Menu and believe it is something to do with GNOME, when I launch whisker menu either via a terminal command or keyboard shortcut it doesn't focus which means that I am unable to use the search bar, even when I click on it, I have to close and reopen the menu.

I have set org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences focus_new_windows to 'strict' which solves all other focusing issues I had where applications were launching into the background but just can't get whisker menu to work.

There is a way to get it to work by setting the org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences focus_mode to say 'sloppy' or 'mouse' but this means I have to hover over whisker after I open it with a keyboard shortcut, which kind of makes using a shortcut redundant really..
