Performance impact of xfwm4 + compositing in games

Hello,

it looks like most games don't set the proper hints for xfwm4, so they won't unredirect and thus run a little choppy.
Is there anything i can do about it, except disable compositing or switch to compton? (compton doesn't support the fancy alt+tab previews sad)
mutter/compton seem to handle it a little different and unredirect everything that's fullscreen, no matter if they have set the proper hints. I'd love to see a setting for this in xfwm4 too.
(tried latest xfwm4-git)

It should, yes, but the game i've tested (team fortress classic, an old goldsrc game) still runs worse with compositing turned on unfortunately.
