In ArchLinux, I was unable to open .pnm files in ristretto 0.8.2. Downgrading to ver 0.8.1 immediately solved this problem.
I'm wondering whether this is a bug in ristretto 0.8.2 itself, or specifically in the Arch Community package. Has this problem occurred in other distros?

Oddly enough, this works for me in Xubuntu with 0.8.2 but not in Arch. One of the changes in 0.8.2 was for ristretto to start detecting image types using mime types and libmagic instead of extensions. This is probably what broke it. The question is, how did Xubuntu get around this?
Just downgraded the "file" (libmagic) package to 5.30-1 and it also works. My guess is it's a regression in the file package that ristretto has a hard dependency on since 0.8.2 that causes the problem. Xubuntu 17.04 is still on 5.29.

Today I upgraded ristretto back to 0.8.2. Also, file was included among today's upgrades (now file 5.32-1).
After these upgrades ristretto is able to open .pnm files.

What version of the "file" package are you running? The bug was in the initial 5.32 version of that package.
