It does not appear with apparently the same exact sources backported to Debian Jessie in MX 15/16.

So if you try to change the wallpaper folders by clicking in Stretch, any choices are visible but grayed out (disabled). There are some workarounds, such as clicking the pen icon in upper left and manually entering a folder path, but wonder why this is happening in Stretch and not some other distros.

not sure why this happens and if this a bug in xfce or debian but the fileselector wants to open an image but you have to select a folder instead - really weird

It sounds like this bug. There was a gtk 2.24.31 change that resulted in the issue that you are seeing.
It was fixed in this commit. However, it wasn't officially released until version 4.13.0 of xfdesktop - which is also the GTK3 port of xfdesktop. Perhaps the debian maintainers can cherry-pick the patch and add it to their packaging of the 4.12 release?
Edit: Sorry, I lie. Looks like it made it to the 4.12.4 release of xfdesktop.

Thanks, we backported the Debian testing 4.12.3-4 version to Stretch, since it cherry picked the fix from 4.12.4 as you thought possible, and that fixed it right off! Debian really should push that into stretch-updates though...it's been fixed in testing since February. Just must have been overlooked.
