Found out, that the SSD on my desktop machine was slowly dying.
So I activated now the automatic messages for smart control. Installed smartmontools smart-notifier and configured /etc/smartd.conf
Works so far here on Mint 18.2
My question now: Is it possible to modify those messages displayed?

Do you mean how notifications are handled in Xfce? See xfce4-notifyd-config, though there's not much there for options.
As far as the the message itself is concerned, I'm sure that you noticed that this app has nothing to do with Xfce. Couple of alternative sources of help:
1) the Documentation and FAQs of smartmon itself: https://www.smartmontools.org/
2) web search on smart-notifier, with results such as this: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Smartmontools
3) the man page: http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/tru … rtd.8.html
Good luck.
MX-23 (based on Debian Stable) with our flagship Xfce 4.18.

Found this "Alternatively, you may create a custom notification (bubble) as seen in other GNOME programs."
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Smartmontools
And that looks a lot like xfce4.notify
