When I click on the file menu in Mousepad the desktop instantly freezes, the other items on the menu work as normal. This is on a new install of Debian Stretch. Tried it with the Taskmanager running and it didn't appear to put excessive load on cpu or memory. Any ideas how I could debug this?

Run it from a terminal and report any errors you see.

Sorry I was actually using it from the commandline when it happened, but I missed this line which I got when I
did it on purpose. Another point of interest it very slowly uses more and more memory.
Glib GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_ref ; assertion 'G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed.
Thanks for the answer I have got to like Mousepad to use, it is a lot like Gedit was before Gnome set about wrecking it.

Sorry I've no idea what that error means but maybe someone else can help.

Yes this appears to be the same. A couple of points.
The version is 0.4.0-4 so hardly changed but the dependances list is different( libc6 (>= 2.4), libglib2.0-0 (>= 2.41.1), libgtk2.0-0 (>= 2.24.0), libgtksourceview2.0-0 (>= 2.10.0), libpango-1.0-0 (>= 1.14.0), dconf-gsettings-backend | gsettings-backend)
The other point which is remarkable as noted in the bug report, the mouser pointer is free to move but nothing can get focus.
I noted the remove and completely reinstall removes and the "Goodies packages" will there be any problems likely with this? I don't mind just leaving it there for now if it is of any use to the developers.
