I am trying to change my account picture (gravatar). When I click on the link to change gravatar it takes me to this page which requires making a wordpress account or coding experience. This used to be easy.

From the descriptive text on the relevant (forum) profile page, it appears that the user's avatar image is "connected with their email address" - which some might not be able to tolerate, since it more or less removes the pseudo-anonymity of forum accounts (and makes the concept of user names pointless, I'd imagine).

You probably already have your e-mail account associated with Gravatar/Wordpress, maybe try to use "Lost password" function: https://wordpress.com/wp-login.php?action=lostpassword
And then try again to log in ("Sign In") to Gravatar with your new password, using your e-mail address as your login.
