This is for Xfce 4.12, and xfce4-terminal 0.8.6.
I am aware that the font used by xfce4-terminal can be changed by selecting the Preferences -> Appearance menu in an instance of an xfce4-terminal window. The thing is, when the change is enabled in a particular instance, it is instantly applied to all currently existing instances of xfce4-terminal. While this makes sense in many circumstances, it is not well aligned with my needs.
In this light, is it possible to change this behavior? Is it possible to configure Xfce, or xfce4-terminal, so that such changes apply only to the xfce4-terminal instance (and instances launched afterwards) where they were made? Nothing in the xfce4-terminal configuration features seems to be relevant to this, but I may be wrong.

I've noticed this as well. xfce4-terminal used to have a "--disable-server" argument that would allow instances to have their own configuration settings. The parameter still exists, but the functionality seems broken.
