For a few years now, I've been getting the following message in ~/.xsession-errors each time I start xfce4 from the command line via startx thru .xsession:
(xfce4-session:30516): xfce4-session-WARNING **: Unable to launch "xfce4-settings-helper": Failed to execute child process "xfce4-settings-helper" (No such file or directory)
and I've finally decided to try and do something about it.
My environment is Devuan Linux and xfce4 4.12.3. I understand that xfce4-settings-helper disappeared a couple of years ago, so I've had trouble finding out why xfce4-session is trying to run it. Thanks to help from "An unwilling dive in xfce4 internals" I eventually found that the file ~/.cache/sessions/xfce4-session-Pentium90:3 has these lines among others:
[15] bryan: egrep xfce4-settings-helper xfce4-session-Pentium90:3
Client3_CloneCommand=xfce4-settings-helper
Client3_RestartCommand=xfce4-settings-helper,--display,:3.0,--sm-client-id,2acc04c86-1818-4cbf-9bb1-14e6e48e53dc
Client3_Program=xfce4-settings-helper
Client0_CloneCommand=xfce4-settings-helper
Client0_RestartCommand=xfce4-settings-helper,--display,:3.0,--sm-client-id,200794a4d-d3dc-4188-a714-c14824ffc151
Client0_Program=xfce4-settings-helper

I tried just moving that file out of the way and restarting xfce4, which did not work very well. So I would like to know what is the best way to clean the file up. Can I just delete the lines containing xfce4-settings-helper? If not, what should xfce4-settings-helper be replaced with?
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks,

When you delete anything in session-cache you need to do it outside of Xfce. It con't be done while Xfce is running unless you use the clear saved session button in Settings - Sessions and Startup - Sessions

Hi ozjd, thanks for the reply.
Well, that was a disaster.
I first tried exiting xfce4, then deleting the ~/.cache/sessions session file. When I tried to get back into xfce4, the only thing that showed up was my window manager - fvwm. I recovered from that, then tried the "Clear saved sessions" button in Sessions and Startup -> Session. Same result.
I'm now back to square one. I guess I really need a tip on how something called xfce4-session-helper get put into the session file in the first place. Then I could go track that down.
Any other tips? Thanks in advance

Fvwm? You aren't using Xfce?

I use everything except xfwm4.
