the effect of font size

i set the Xfce font size to 16.  in xfce4-terminal i set it to 14 (i had been using this size under Unity and continued).  one effect i notice is that the characters in my custom search form are much larger, larger than 16.  it looks like maybe double that size or more.

could be the dpi (ppi), it may also be affected by fontconfig or xresources
