Xubuntu 16.04 GTK2 theme setting problem Tree View

I would like to decrease the line spacing of the TreeControls in my current theme.

I am using the GTK4.12 theme "Graybird", which was standard with my Xubuntu 16.04 installation. I found I could tweak my application settings by editing the file

    /usr/share/themes/Graybird/gft-2.0/gtkrc

The update was visible after switching to another theme and back. But I did not find a value to affect the line spacing. I expected that the parameter

    GtkTreeView::vertical-separator=0

would be right. But I did see no change.

Any Ideas?

Thanks
