automatically set up an external monitor

xfce4-display-settings -m
does a good job of setting up external monitors for me.  It shows the relevant possibilities, and even selects and implements one.

To make it work great for me would be to have it (optionally) disappear after a short while to have fully automatic connection of external displays.  Does anyone know how to do that?
