[Solved]Thunar Create Document Broken

Trying to create a new document within an existing folder is broken.

$ xfdesktop -V
This is xfdesktop version 4.13.3, running on Xfce 4.12.
Built with GTK+ 3.24.5, linked with GTK+ 3.24.7.
Build options:
    Desktop Menu:        enabled
    Desktop Icons:       enabled
    Desktop File Icons:  enabled
$ thunar -V
Thunar 1.8.4 (Xfce 4.12)

Steps to reproduce:
-Open existing folder
-Right click in open space
-Context menu appears, but Create Document context is just a thin line
Note: Create Document works normally on the desktop

Antergos
Kernel 5.0.4

This is happening on 2 different machines.

I tried downgrading Thunar to 1.8.3, but it made no difference.

Yes. I reported the bug about 10 days ago. See: https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15200. It's related to a recent change in GTK3.

Try downgrading gtk3.

Dropping back to gtk3 2.24.4 did the trick.
I guess this means Antergos is officially on gtk3?
And why my desktop icon labels are back to 8 characters long, after you assisted me in getting them more "readable" in gtk2 a few months ago sad

If Antergos follows Arch closely, then xfdesktop will have been updated to it's gtk3 version. For the gtk2 snippet that you used before, try the following compatible gtk3 snippet (put it in ~/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css - create the file if it doesn't exist):

* {
        -XfdesktopIconView-ellipsize-icon-labels: 1;
        -XfdesktopIconView-cell-spacing: 0.0;
        -XfdesktopIconView-cell-padding: 0.0;

As Antergos posts, they do indeed closely follow Arch.
I made the changes to ~/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css. I tried logging out/in and reboot, but no joy.
I've also made other changes to ~/gtkrc-2.0.mine just to verify 2.0 isn't being used, and they no longer take effect either.

Any other suggestions?

Can you post back the contents of ~/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css? This has to be formatted properly to work.

Also post back the results of:

xfdesktop -V

Ok. Found the issue. For some strange reason, the gtk.css file needs to begin with the "* {" line. Nothing above it. That is really weird. Anyways, try this:

I think I've got that. See post #7. I had taken the "*" at one point to see if that made a difference, but no. It doesn't seem to matter if the "*" is there or not.

I copy/paste your post code just to be sure, but still no joy.

It's the comment. Remove the comment and empty line. The file needs to start with "*".

That's the really strange part. And it's only in this scenario. Comments work fine elsewhere in the file.

I have this issue as well, and I don't even have ~/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css at all, so I went ahead and created it with just this in it:

But the problem remains after a reboot.

Some other observations:
Oddly, this "Create Document" menu does and only does work on the Desktop;
But it won't work if I browse to ~/Desktop or any other location in Thunar.

It's xfce running on vanilla Arch fully updated to this date.

Your debug info shows that it was accepted and set. Try changing the last 3 numbers to higher values (20.0, 20.0, 10.0) to see the noticeable difference. Then tweak as required. Make sure you "pkill xfdesktop" after changing the values and saving the file for it to take effect.

Some other observations:
Oddly, this "Create Document" menu does and only does work on the Desktop;
But it won't work if I browse to ~/Desktop or any other location in Thunar.

This is a known and reported bug that is caused by a recent update in gtk3. Reverting gtk3 will fix the issue. Follow the bug report for info on when it gets fixed. This issue is not related to the above.

Create document works as expected now since my last update:

$ xfdesktop -V

(xfdesktop:1752): Gtk-WARNING **: 11:04:53.029: Theme parsing error: gtk.css:11:0: expected '{' after selectors
This is xfdesktop version 4.13.3, running on Xfce 4.12.
Built with GTK+ 3.24.7, linked with GTK+ 3.24.8.
Build options:
    Desktop Menu:        enabled
    Desktop Icons:       enabled
    Desktop File Icons:  enabled

and the bug https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15200 shows as fixed.
