Something besides the standard method?

Right-click Panel > Panel > Panel Preferences... > Appearance tab, select "Solid color" as style and click on the "Color" box to have at it.

standard method is fine.  i just don't know the GUI and have no idea how to find things.  how did you learn it?

As we write in our Users Manual at the beginning of the Xfce customization section: "right-click is your friend."

Re: how to make panel be a different color?

my problem is that "know computers" didn't include GUI.  that is because GUI didn't exist back then.  i got into OS programming and focused my learning there.  now, in retirement, i started to learn some GUI but started with Unity on Ubuntu.  i used to do things like edit system files to add users.  that was an improvement over the old ways.  Unity did things differently by having panel links directly to do things i needed.  i got to know that.  now, i am learning all over again with Xfce.  but many things are better, at least, once i know them.  i am at that phase, now.  a tutorial would bore me in the 80% teaching "what is an icon".
