Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia, Xfce. [SOLVED]
So this is what is going on; When I close a file I have opened on the desktop, the file remains highlited. In the past upon closing a file it would un-highlite automatically. it would be nice if the file would automatically un-highlite upon being closed. There is nothing in the desktop setting for this. So is there a way to fix this problem???

Which version of xfdesktop? On the 4.13 development branch, this doesn't happen. The file is unselected when opened.

When I installed xfce4 I did not pay attention to the complete version label. So I went about the internet to find a way to find my xfce version, and found this.
charles@charles-Inspiron-1525 ~ $ xfce4-about
** (xfce4-about:4593): WARNING **: Couldn't connect to accessibility bus: Failed to connect to socket /tmp/dbus-FEDOw7BKyW: Connection refused
xfce4-about-Message: No vendor information found in "/usr/share/xfce4/vendorinfo".
But then the reply also gave me a GUI window that implied I had version 4.12, so I guess that is what it is.

Try this:
xfdesktop -V
I'm interested in the version of xfdesktop that you are running.

Just downloaded Mint 18.3 Xfce and ran it in a VM and I can't replicate the problem there either.
What Appearance theme are you using?
Do you have any content in ~/.gtkrc-2.0? If so, can you post it back?
Also, can you try with a second account on your computer to see if the problem exists there as well?

In case it helps, I can replicate this with same versions of Mint and xfdesktop when right clicking to open. Does not happen with double click.

Ahh, yes. I was double-clicking all the time. The same happens on the current development release of xfdesktop.
@chazb, how far back was it that it didn't do that? Is this a recent change?

When I double left click it, which is something I seldom do, the problem doesn't happen. I usually left click then right click for the drop down and open,,,the problem happens. Maybe I just change some habits.
So how do I access, ~/.gtkrc-2.0?
Second account is the same.

Don't worry about the ~/.gtkrc-2.0 file now that the issue has been identified. How far back was it that it didn't do that? Is this a recent change?

I guess i just never paid attention, untell about 3 or 4 days ago, when I posted this on the Linux Mint Forum.
"LM 18.3 Sylvia, Xfce.
First let me say that when I click file on my desktop to open/exicute it, one must first highlite it, and click open it. After closing it, it should not remain highlited, but it does. And I have to ckick some open space on the desk to un-highlite. I guess there is a desktop setting that I have over looked
I have always said nobody, but nobody writes malware for Linux, but I can from time to time be wrong. So this is what happened; I was on Facebook a coupla days ago, and suddenly the website started to bounce around on my screen and I was not able to maintain control. So I panicked closed the browser, in the process I had a highlited file on my desktop that was wiped clean of its contents. Does anybody have an idea as to what happened???"
I first learned how to open a file years ago using Windows 95, and thinking back it is not ant different now than it was then, double to open, left click to get the dropdown. Made mountain out of mole hill. Sorry about that.
Though I would still like to know how to view the contents of, ~/.gtkrc-2.0.

Feel free to create a bug report to see what the developers say.

cat ~/.gtkrc-2.0
Not sure what to say about the browser issue. I've never seen anything like that.

Is this it?
charles@charles-Inspiron-1525 ~ $ cat ~/.gtkrc-2.0
include ".gtkrc-xfce"
Offline
What that says, is to include the contents of .gtkrc-xfce. So to view the contents of that file:
cat ~/.gtkrc-xfce
