Post xubuntu-desktop install on ubuntu

In the unity days, after adding XFCE it was necessary to purge a load of unwanted items.    All the guides I've seen re adding xubuntu-desktop just finish up at the completed install, with no mention of clean-up.

What is the consensus? Is that OK, or should I be removing packages. 

By the way xubuntu iso is not an option, as this is a "Linux Station" virtual environment on a QNAP NAS, and only Ubuntu 18.04 or 16.04 is offered.
