Hello,
I am using a fresh install of Debian 10 XFCE. But I also had this problem on my old install of Debian 9.
The left sidebar in thunar and the contacts sidebar in the write window of thunderbird sometimes flicker. This is caused by the sidebar being turned on/off several times per second.
It happens on a very irregular basis, and I cannot trigger it on purpose.
Turning off composit has no effect. A complete new install of xfce4 had no effect.
Any ideas as to the cause?

Hello and welcome.
Hello,
This is caused by the sidebar being turned on/off several times per second.
Are you manually flipping the visibility in the sidebar that quickly to generate the flickering? Or does it just happen on its own?
Any ideas as to the cause?
Which video card and driver are you using? Since it is happening to both an Xfce and a non-Xfce app, it looks like its probably a system issue?
Also, which GTK Appearance theme are you using? Depending on the theme, especially if it doesn't officially support the installed version of GTK3, you might see weird stuff happening.

It happens on its own. It can happen without me being even close to the PC.
System is a Thinkpad X250. Intel video card.
Adwaita theme. I have installed nothing extra to do with the appearance exept Numix circle icons.

when it happens does it start immediately, always? or, at least sometimes, does it start later, on its own?
about what percentage of times you run these does it happen?
how often do you run them?
have you ever run any other programs with sidebars that this never happens on?

It happens sometimes several times a day, and sometimes no flickering for 10 days. Seems completely random.
Thunar is almost always open.
I know of no other programs with such sidebars.

Seems it was the keyboard. The key F9 (shortcut for sidebars) seems to have gotten stuck randomly without me ever touching it.
After taking apart the keys mechanism and cleaning no further flickering.
