I cannot read the file/folder names in thunar because the text is too small. How can I adjust the font size for thunar, and only thunar?
I see nothing in the settings that allows you to change the font. Zooming only changes the icon sizes, not the text.
Thanks.

Hello and welcome.
Which version of thunar are you using?
Is the problem only with thunar or are other programs having the same issue?
Do you have anything in ~/.gtkrc-2.0, ~/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css or ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini?

Thunar 1.8.4. Debian 10.
Let me be clear that I'm not saying there is a problem with Thunar. The fonts aren't behaving oddly in Thunar. I just need bigger text to read the file names in Thunar. This is for my HTPC in my living room, and I can't read 10 point font from 2.5 meters away.
I have none of those files. This is a brand new install.

The reason I asked was that you can change the font for all apps or just for thunar. I'll document both options.
All Apps
Go to Settings Manager > Appearance > Fonts and change the size of the default font.
Just Thunar
Add the following snippet to ~/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css (create the file if it doesn't exist):
.thunar { font-size: 18pt }
...and change the "18" to a size to suit. To have it take effect you either need to restart thunar and the thunar daemon;
thunar -q && thunar
...or log out and back in again.
Edit: Actually, the "All Apps" option may or may not work for you because of the version of Xfce you are using. You can test to see if it does.
