X Window input suddenly stops

I'm running Xubuntu 16.04 with the latest updates
I'm not sure when this started happening exactly, but I'm posting about it now because I just lost a crap ton of work as a result of it
yes I'm livid, but I'm being as coherent as I can be

it seems to happen whenever my CPU becomes overloaded and I'm using swap

in this case, R-clicking on the terminal window to paste a wget url was the trigger, where the menu froze with a gray box
all input just randomly dropped other than being able to move the cursor (all windows were active)
I couldn't click on anything
nor did I have any keyboard input other than to drop to a tty

the only way to fix it that I know of is to restart xorg through lightdm

I have no idea what exactly causes it, as I can't get any process info at the time it happens
the logs seem to be useless after a restart
