Hello and welcome.
Can you confirm the xfdesktop version number? 4.4.3 is over 11 years old.
Also, why do you want to remove the dependency? What are you trying to accomplish?
Since, 4.11.4:
dbus-glib is now required. Since xfconf requires it and
xfconf is already required for xfdesktop, this shouldn't
change dependancies much for xfdesktop.

it is 4.4.3, to be sure. i am on slackware 12.2 64bit.
dbus-1 dbus-glib, i do not need these 2. i never do. they are not easy to understand, or config, some kind of obfuscation i think.
but i need desktop items, which require dbus. otherwise all is well.
i want a functioning desktop,with minimium dependency.
btw, xfconf does not exist in 4.4.3.

Not sure how to answer this. 4.4.3 is before my time. You could ask the devs on the mailing list, but this version of Xfce is deprecated and no longer supported.

i have commented out dbus-related stuff, configure enable-desktop-icons to 1
got it compiled. but in settings dialog, file icons/lanucher item does not
show up.
the code passed through gtk-add-item, then got removed along the way after that?
how do u guys single step though code when you debug xfdesktop?
