Mouse cursor garbled when typing

I am running Xubuntu 19.10

When I type in a field in some applications, like system settings, the mouse cursor changes from a vertical bar to a block of random pixels.

It used to be that the mouse cursor would hide (become invisible) while I typed. I don't know what caused the random pixels to appear instead.

The mouse cursor does not change or hide in some applications, like xfce-terminal or Firefox.

What could be wrong?

How to I disable the hiding of the mouse cursor on keyboard input?

Re: Mouse cursor garbled when typing

I can't reproduce it in Xubuntu 18.04, you may have found a bug. Care to post a screenshot?

Re: Mouse cursor garbled when typing

All attempts to screenshot failed to show the garbled mouse cursor.
I can screenshot the mouse cursor when it is not hidden or garbled.
But when the cursor is garbled it seems the system thinks it is hidden and it is not included in the screenshot.
