Usually freshly started programs appear to the right of the last program on the taskbar.
However, as odd as it may sound, when I'm running Mozilla Thunderbird and start Firefox, the browser appears to the left of Thunderbird.
Is that intended?

In the Window Buttons plugin properties, what sorting order do you have set? Sounds like you want it to be sorted by Timestamp.

Excuse my ignorance, but where do I find the window button plugin properties?
I only see the settings for xfce4-panel when doing a right click and no sign of a sort by timestamp.

Yeah, it confused me at first, too. There's a Window Buttons configuration dialog.
In the Panel Settings, go to the Elements tab, and in the list of elements double click on "Window Buttons" (or select it and press the edit button).
If you select "Show handle", a separator will appear in the panel, to the left of the buttons, where you can right click and select "Properties" to access said config dialog.
I think the devs are aware that these settings are a bit too hidden, but I couldn't find the reference.

Thank you alcornoqui, now I found it.
Changed the value from "Group title and timestamp" to "Timestamp" and it's like it logically should be. Might be worth considering to make this the default since most people are used to this.

Great. I agree on the average user expectations on that default.
