XFCE4 Grey Screen upon VNC Connection; Xvnc connects and authenticates

Hello,

I'm using RealVNC with XFCE4 in Ubuntu 16.04. My group has a need for the 256 encrypted connection, unfortunately, so we can't use the popular TightVNC or something similar. I'm following all the recommended guidelines listed for RealVNC (xstartup script and others)here , and have had some success in getting xfce to work, but I can't pin point what's going correct when it does. I'm running the same packages recommended in the consol xfce vnc container (supervisor xfce4 xfce4-terminal xterm), which might be the issue. I've also tried this with just xfce4 with no luck as well.

Interestingly, adding 

xsetroot -solid grey

in my xstartup does seem to have some functionality, I can confirm it changes the whole screen to the given color - so something is working with the display, but I'm at a loss on where to trouble shoot.

I'd be extremely grateful for some ideas of what to do here, I'm not sure how to troubleshoot this log file below. Essentially, I'm curious if there is anything xfce related that looks like an error that would be contributing to the gray screen.
