I have been facing this issue since Xubuntu 18.04 it continues in 20.04. Here are instructions to replicate it:
Testcase:
- Set `Keep running instance in the background` and `Single window` inside xfce4-appfinder settings
- Kill xfce4-appfinder
- Open xfce4-appfinder using the terminal
- Type `menulibre` and open it
- Toggle `Hide from menus` in Web Browser entry and save the changes
- The following error it's printed:
$ xfce4-appfinder
(menulibre:9598): Gtk-WARNING **: 21:36:35.858: gtk_menu_attach_to_widget(): menu already attached to GtkMenuButton
(menulibre:9598): Gtk-WARNING **: 21:36:35.898: gtk_menu_attach_to_widget(): menu already attached to GtkMenuButton
(xfce4-appfinder:9575): xfce4-appfinder-WARNING **: 21:36:57.546: Failed to reload the root menu: Error on line 234 char 5: Document ended unexpectedly with elements still open — “Layout” was the last element opened
After that, if you open xfce4-appfinder again (Super+R), the application list would be empty until you kill and restart xfce4-appfinder.
I filed this as a bug in launchpad because it happens only with menulibre (shipped by default in Xubuntu) and not when manually editing a .desktop file.
(It's not that big of an issue since i'm not always editing menu entries)
