I don't think Thunar has a side pane preview like you describe. I have seen it before with Dolphin and maybe Caja.

This is my only file manager. and all side tabs in the file dialog with the tunar are identical.

Ok, that's actually the file chooser/save dialogue. it's a GTK widget. Unfortunately I can't tell you how to customize it. I'm sure someone here can though.

Assuming gtk3, then look here for more info. You'll need to code the preview in to the app you are developing.
