xfce4-notifyd not logging

I am running Xfce4 (Xubuntu). Xfce4-notifyd is running and I do get gmail notifications and other programs.  I have enabled always logging for all applications but they are never logged, i.e. the notification log is always empty. To troubleshoot, I sent a notification using notify-send command, but it also was not logged.

Re: xfce4-notifyd not logging

Hello and welcome.

Did the test notification work? Did you see the notification?

Can we see your notification settings:

xfconf-query -c xfce4-notifyd -lv

...and:

systemctl --user status xfce4-notifyd

...and:

ps -ef | grep -E 'notif|dunst'

Re: xfce4-notifyd not logging

Hi ToZ and thank you for your warm welcome!

Yes the test notification using notify-send did work. I correct my previous statement about the installed OS, it is Pop OS based on Ubuntu, and I installed xfce4 later on the system.

$ uname -a
Linux pop-os 5.4.0-7634-generic #38~1596560323~20.04~7719dbd-Ubuntu SMP Tue Aug 4 19:12:34 UTC 2 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
 xfconf-query -c xfce4-notifyd -lv

gives :

/applications/known_applications <<UNSUPPORTED>>
/expire-timeout 60
/log-level 1
/log-level-apps 0
/notification-log true
/notify-location 2
/primary-monitor 0

and

systemctl --user status xfce4-notifyd
● xfce4-notifyd.service - XFCE notifications service
Loaded: error (Reason: Unit xfce4-notifyd.service failed to load properly:>
     Active: inactive (dead)

Aug 13 09:09:21 pop-os systemd[1713]: xfce4-notifyd.service: Two services alloc>

and

ps -ef | grep -E 'notif|dunst'

Re: xfce4-notifyd not logging

sina        2074    1713  0 Aug12 ?        00:00:02 /usr/bin/dunst

You have dunst (another notification daemon) running and processing notification events. xfce4-notifyd is not running and as such not processing notifications.

Try uninstalling dunst (assuming you don't want to use it) and re-logging in to see if xfce4-notifyd starts. It should then start logging.
