I am running vanilla debian unstable and XFCE4 4.14. I have disabled desktop switching via mouse thumbwheel but the desktops will still switch while on the desktop switcher applet.The problem persists on Linux Mint 19.2, 19.3, and 20. I did a search and did not find anything esle on the subject.
Has anyone else ran into this problem and, if so, is there a fix.
Thanks,
Glenn

Hi GlennThigpen, and welcome to the forum.
Just to be sure, you right clicked on the Workplace Switcher applet and selected Properties, and unchecked the "Switch workspaces..." box there, correct?
I ask because that did disable it for me on an older system.

And upon checking a 4.14 version in a VM, I can replicate this issue.

Greetings!
Tested this on my fully-installed Mint 20.0 system, and the OP's observation is correct: the workspace switcher plugin ignores the chosen scroll-wheel behavior, even though the correct values (true v false) are updated in the system's xfce4-panel.xml file.
Cheers, m4a

tried to replicate it but works fine here on my system(arch)

I checked my settings again and do have switching the desktops via the mouse wheel unchecked. But vinox14 reports that his Arch system works correctly. Is this something that is maybe a bug in Debian based systems?

I suspect it's more likely a version difference. I believe the offender might be xfwm4 based on the scroll_workspace property in the Settings Editor, but I could be wrong, as that's always been off for me there, while the scrolling still works properly via the applet settings.

And I've confirmed the value is written correctly in ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-panel.xml:
<property name="plugin-11" type="string" value="pager">
<property name="rows" type="uint" value="2"/>
<property name="workspace-scrolling" type="bool" value="false"/>
</property>
EDIT: I missed mint4all already mentioning this, sorry.

Well this is odd. I went here and cannot find a workspace or pager plugin in the list.

I checked my xfce4-panel.xml and it is correct also. Don't know why there is no pager listed as a panel plugin either. XFCE4 life is good, but it is getting strange.

I suspect ToZ will have something worthy to post upon seeing this thread.
The pager not being listed is because it's called Workplace Switcher as presented to us.
I tried looking up wnckpager as I've seen some posts from ToZ using that, but didn't get far with it. Most stuff I'm finding is old.

I could be wrong, but I'm suspecting the package libwnck-3-0 could be the issue. From my 18.3 Mint where disabling works:
scott@scott-HP ~ $ apt policy libwnck-3-0
libwnck-3-0:
Installed: 3.14.1-2
Candidate: 3.14.1-2
Version table:
*** 3.14.1-2 500
500 http://mirrors.advancedhosters.com/ubuntu xenial/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
On Mint 20 it's 3.36.0-1
The only bugs I could find were for causing flashing when scrolling. Nothing reported about turning scrolling off not working.

I believe this issue seems to be what you are experiencing. Looks like MrEen is correct, a change in libwnck.
Please remember to mark your thread [SOLVED] to make it easier for others to find

I swear ToZ, I just found that bug report seconds ago! And it was quite a convoluted path to get there. I must remember to bookmark https://gitlab.xfce.org/ and start there from now on. Almost every search I try never has any hits that points there.

Thanks for all of the input guys and the information on the bug report. Looks like this is something I will just have to live with. A minor nuisance. But I would like to know what Arch has done differently as vinox14 said that everything works correctly for him.

Ah! I've always untick show miniature view in workspace switcher settings that's why it works as it's expected but not when miniature view is active.
Offline
@vinox14. Yep, that does work. But I like the miniature view. I am just going to have to be careful with that mouse wheel until the problem is fixed, if it ever is.
