XFCE and optimus manager display management

xfce-version: 4.14
OS: Archlinux
Kernel: 5.8
Display manager: sddm

I have just switched to using optimus manager, in order to make use of hybrid graphics, and I would say the transition was smooth except for one little quirk I just noticed.

First I open display manager and rearrange my screens as shown in the following image:

XUDAOhj.png

Here is what the displays look like when I press apply:

bjs1fi9.png.

Now I try to rearrange the displays so that the larger one is above my laptop:

Bdrgk3g.png

When I press apply, xfce rearranges the displays so that the top display's height extends all the way down to the bottom of my laptop display.
Here is a screenshot of all the displays:

Ut5uYzZ.png

As you can see, the top display is extended all the way down and cuts off my primary display.

Can anyone advice me on what to do about this?

Thanks

P.S. I should mention that when I switch to just using the nvidia graphics card, the displays are shown correctly.

Re: XFCE and optimus manager display management

Can you run and report the output of "xrandr" for both scenarios as well as the nvidia scenario?

Re: XFCE and optimus manager display management

Interesting. In hybrid mode, Xfce is enabling panning:

HDMI-1-0 connected 2560x1080+490+0 677mm x 290mm panning 2560x2160+490+0 tracking 3050x2160+0+0 border 0/0/0/0

Unfortunately, I'm not able to test this myself, but it might be worth creating a bug report for this - see if a developer can chime in.

Yea, I noticed that too, and I was trying to use xrandr to get rid of the panning, but even that didn't work because I couldn't get the positioning right.

Is this the right place the raise the issue? Also, under what project should I raise the issue?

Yes. I would put it under the xfce4-settings project - it contains the display management component.

Thanks for your help. I've reported it here:

Hopefully that helps.
