Keyboard shortcuts delay

Hi all.

I'm sitting on Manjaro XFCE kernel 5.4.

Tinkering with keyboard settings as I've got myself a new keyboard, this is roughly what I have done:

* Finding out the function keys didn't work properly straight out of the box, so I pressed "Restore to Defaults" in the Keyboard > Application shortcuts window, which made me lose a lot of the predefined keyboard application shortcuts.

* I've then executed this command to restore the Manjaro XFCE predefined application shortcuts:

cp /etc/skel/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-keyboard-shortcuts.xml ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-keyboard-shortcuts.xml

* I've also followed these instructions in order to get my function keys to work properly:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ap … o_not_work

So my keyboard is now working as intended and I've got the shortcuts right.

The thing is, after a boot or a return from suspend/hibernate/sleep etc. there is a ~1-5 minute time period where my keyboard shortcuts are not working. The rest of the keyboard works fine. When they start working, they are being executed, so if I've pressed my Super key x times, the whisker menu will open/close corresponding to that number of times I've pressed the key. Just to make clear the key presses are being registered, they are just not executed when I'm pressing the keyboard.

I've tried swapping keyboards, rerolling the function keys part etc. problem is still present... Guess I've messed up somewhere during this process as everything worked just fine before, I just can't figure out where.

This is my

journalctl -f

log from after I've booted, logged in, and until the shortcuts started to work:

Re: Keyboard shortcuts delay

Hello and welcome.

xfsettings is dumping core. Can you run the following in a terminal window:

XFSETTINGSD_DEBUG=1 xfsettingsd --no-daemon --replace &> ~/xfsettingsd.log &

...then do a suspend/restore event. Once keyboard shortcuts are working again, post back the contents of the ~/xfsettingsd.log file.

Do you have a large .Xmodmap file?

Also:

xfsettingsd -V

Check the permissions of your ~/.ICEAuthority file. When logged out, delete this file - it will be re-created.

Hello ToZ - and thank you for your help!

Yes that's the part I've noticed to be weird as well, although I don't know what it means.

Apparently I can't get shortcuts to work after a suspend/restore event (at least not within a reasonable amount of time), although I think xfsettingsd.log might have something useable:

My .Xmodmap is 248 lines and ~11 kB, not sure if that is considered large?

What should permissions of ~/.ICEAuthourity be?

According to that bug report, the reporter also had 248 lines. Try renaming ~/.Xmodmap to ~/.Xmodmap.old and re-loging in again to see if it helps.

What should permissions of ~/.ICEAuthourity be?

It should be owned by you. Mine is:

According to that bug report, the reporter also had 248 lines. Try renaming ~/.Xmodmap to ~/.Xmodmap.old and re-loging in again to see if it helps.

What should permissions of ~/.ICEAuthourity be?

It should be owned by you. Mine is:

-rw------- 1 toz toz 0 Jul 12 18:52 .ICEauthority

The following lines have been appended to xfsettingsd.log and shortcuts are now working:

My .ICEauthority permissions are identical to yours. Will try and log out and delete it now though.

Will also try to rename .Xmodmap now and turn back with more info!

Everything seems to be working as supposed to now!!!

However, I don't have a .Xmodmap file now? (I thought a new one would be made upon relog or reboot)

Could you provide some insight on what might be the issue, and whether or not it is fine with no .Xmodmap file?

Re: Keyboard shortcuts delay

Rename the .Xmodmap file back and see if the issue returns.

It does.

Thinking about it: I might have executed this command a while ago:

xmodmap -pke > ~/.Xmodmap

Explaining why I have a .Xmodmap file.

Re: Keyboard shortcuts delay

Then it's this bug. If you don't need this file, then just delete it.

Thank you so much ToZ. It's really appreciated.

Some questions while at it:

Will I have to do anything regarding xfsettingsd in debug mode or is that being taken care of upon a reboot?

What was up with xfsettingsd dumping core? Is it caused by the many entries in .Xmodmap?

It will reset after a reboot.

The core dump looked like it was related to the .ICEauthority file. After you reboot, review your logs to see if it is happening again.

Glad to hear. The core dump is not present in the log file anymore. I might have made a mistake though when deleting the .ICEauthority file (although the file has been recreated).

I did it like this:

Logged out -> Entered the terminal at the login screen via Ctrl + Alt + F6, and then logged in through terminal (bummer) -> Deleted .ICEauthority.

It then got to me... I was still logged in, just through the terminal....

What's the correct procedure to delete a file when logged out?

Re: Keyboard shortcuts delay

Yes. The important part here is that you are not in an X session.

I see! Well, I guess it can be considered as solved.

Thank you so much for your help ToZ!
