Inactive Winows Become ghosted

I just upgraded to Xubuntu 20.04 (Xfce 4.14) and would like to know how to turn off the new feature that ghosts the contents of some windows when they lose focus.  One of the main reasons I moved to Xfce was because other Window Managers were trying to force me to do one thing at a time.  I frequently refer to many windows when writing code and documentation.  The fact that I am not typing into a window does not mean I don't want to look at its contents.  I always turn the compositor off in the hope that this will disable any "eye candy" behavior.

Hello and welcome.

1. Is your compositor enabled or disabled when this happens?
2. Do you have "Opacity of Inactive Windows" set to a low value in Settings Manager > Window Manager Tweaks > Compositor tab?

If not, what video card do you have and what driver are you using?

Re: Inactive Winows Become ghosted

Thank you for the quick response.
The compositor is off.
I am using the GPU that comes with the Intel i5-9400 (UHD Graphics 630).
The driver is what comes with Xubuntu 20.04.

Re: Inactive Winows Become ghosted

If the compositor is off, then it is not possible to change the opacity of inactive windows.

What exactly are you seeing? Can you post a screenshot?
Are you using another compositor like compiz?

Re: Inactive Winows Become ghosted

"Settings->Window Manager Tweaks->Compositor->Enable display compositing" is unchecked (disabled).
I have not done anything to add a compositor since OS installation.
Perhaps ghosting is the wrong term.  The text is grayed out - see attached redacted screenshot for an example (the effect is not very bad here due to the white background).

Re: Inactive Winows Become ghosted

Could this be a simple theme issue? Have you tried other themes to see if the issue persists?

I tried every theme in Xubuntu 18.04 (Xfce 14.12) and none have this behavior while every theme does have it in Xubuntu 20.04 (Xfce 14.14).

Re: Inactive Winows Become ghosted

Gotcha. Way over my head why this is happening.

This is an old hit, but might be promising: https://askubuntu.com/questions/876659/ … gle-window

No mention of Compositor there, so no idea if it's going to help or not.

Re: Inactive Winows Become ghosted

The post you refer to is about opacity/transparency which is where you can see one window through another.  In my case the text is "faded" but the window is opaque.  I believe variable opacity is always provided by a compositor.

Re: Inactive Winows Become ghosted

Thank you ToZ. I was hoping someone else would agree with me on this but I've read several threads about backdrop and no one with any influence thinks there is a problem with it. It is all too difficult and I will have to live with it.
