I have a habit to use Thunar to open files I work with. There are at least 6-7 different applications I use to open same type of files. The order of applications in right-click menu changes constantly, driving me nuts. Apparently the last used application moves to the top. How can I stop it? Short of setting immutable flag on some conf file.
Thanks for reading.

This comes up every so often.
I *think* it is particular applications that insist on the 'default check' similar to the browser wars.
I *think* because mine only seem to rotate when some programs are used. But, 'last used' does make sense for many, and maybe that is the action that I don't notice with only a few programs per file type. 6-7 is a lot.
You can always fashion some custom actions with easier icons and labels that would stay more stable, although further down on your right click list. Then ignore the first half of the menu. I *think* the menu would settle to one program listed and a second 'other applications', then your custom action lower down...

Hmm, I don't think it is application(s) doing it. Some apps I use are certainly unaware of GTK, it is Thunar remembering what was used. I wonder where this order is stored. I found ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/thunar.xml, but I do not see applications listed there. Does someone know where this is stored or I have to run it with strace? Or can recommend a less "smart" file manager?

...maybe ~/.config/mimeapps.list
So you don't like the custom actions idea? That's what I do.

Custom Actions? Where you set this up? I do not have Xfce4 installed, only Thunar.

in Thunar's menu >Edit>Configure custom actions...
above the last entry 'Preferences'
Open that and take a look, very configurable. With scripts it can be extensive.

OK, I see. Thanks.

No cigar. I added an item there and it does not appear anywhere. It had one item before - "Open Terminal Here", and it shows up in right-click menu. My new item does not. What a nuisance.

They appear contextually depending on your settings on the 'Appearance Conditions' tab.
When you set it up right, they work well.

OK, I even tried reading the manual ... Appearance Conditions ? Where is that. I feel like mentally handicapped.

when you open an action for creation or edit, there are two tabs. 'Basic' where you set the name, command, icons.., and a second tab 'Appearance Conditions' where you set the files types to apply the action to...
This creates a file ~/.config/Thunar/uca.xml

Ouch! Looks like we are getting somewhere, thanks a million!
