Can't Unlock Panel Items (Solved)

I have 4.12 on Debian 10, and have noticed that I cannot change any items on my panels.  Evidently changes will not apply.

For instance, I tried to change my Libreoffice Writer 7.1 to the new 7.2.  When I select the new application, the application selection window closes along with the item edit window and nothing changes or takes effect.

Any ideas how to force the panels to become responsive again?

Does anything get posted to ~/.xsession-errors when you attempt this?

Another way to get debug information is:

xfce4-panel -q && PANEL_DEBUG=1 xfce4-panel

...and after its started all up, try changing the launcher and see what messages get displayed in the terminal window.

Feel free to post all of the output from the above command in case there is something else there causing the issue.

When I used Ctrl-C to stop that last command, I lost my panels.

I was able to go to the settings by use of the context menu key.  When I selected the Panel under Settings, it said it was not active and gave me a chance to start it, which I did.  All was back to normal.  Then it told me I could not make changes because it was in kiosk mode.  Now we're getting somewhere.

Restart your computer and before you log in, go to a virtual terminal (Ctrl+Alt+F2) and log in. Then delete the saved sessions cache:

cd ~/.cache
rm -rf sessions

Then login to the GUI and see if that helps.

If that doesn't work, post back the contents of ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-panel.xml.

I do not seem to have a kiosk mode setting because there is no such thing under /etc/xdg/.

So did clearing the cached sessions not work?

If you open up xfce4-settings-editor and look at the xfce4-panel channel, are the locked boxes checked?

Are you logging in as root? If not, all files in ~/.config/xfce4 should be owned by your user account.

Run this command to reset all permissions in your ~/.config/xfce4 tree to your user account:

sudo chown -R $USER:$USER ~/.config

...then log out and back in again and try to change the launcher once more.

Then after a fresh reboot, before logging in as your user, log in as root into a virtual terminal (Ctrl+Alt+F2). From there, navigate to your user's xfce4 config directory:

cd /home/USER/.config

...where USER is your actual username and issue the command:

chown -R USER:USER ~/.config

...again where USER is your actual username.

Assuming your username account name on your computer is KitchM, then the commands would look like this:

cd /home/KitchM/.config
chown -R KitchM:KitchM xfce4

Then just to be sure, reboot.

Oops!  That was a bit of a "Duh" moment. wink

Logged in as root and it worked fine.  Everything on the panels seems to be editable now by the user.

Thank you so much for your good help.  Solved the problem once again.
