window names across the panel [SOLVED]

each time i open a window on my desktop it puts the name of the window along the panel from the left side.  what are these called?

i'd like to be able to move them around so they in the order i want to view them (many times real fast).  is there a way to do that?  i tried like tabs in Firefox but that didn't work.

Window Buttons plugin (tasklist).

In the Window Buttons properties dialog, there is a "Sorting Order" option. Set it to "None, allow drag-and-drop".

from your wording this makes sense but i am lost trying to find where this properties dialog is to be found.

when i right click on one of the names, expecting a "properties" choice, i don't get one.  i get "Minimize", "Unmaximize", an so on (this is the Firefox window).  so i try elsewhere in the panel.  >> Properties gets a Separator dialog.  i am looking in Whisker Menu but i cannot find it.  i tried "Help" and all it did was bring up Firefox to read online documentation which had no search tool..

i'm still on 4.12.

now i have an additional Window Button to the right of my workspaces view (i don't know its name; this is where i can click io jump work spaces).

It's difficult to get to. If the handle is visible, right-click the handle and select Properties. Otherwise, right-click the panel, select Panel Properties, go to the Items tab and double click on the Window Buttons item. That will get you there.

Re: window names across the panel [SOLVED]

got to it this time.  i was almost there, yesterday, but didn't know to do double-click.  one click on any mouse button was getting me nothing.

what do you mean by "handle"?  is it visible?  i don't know.  "Show handle" is checked but i don't know what to look for.  do you mean the Whisker Menu tab?

i would be nice to have some "master menu" that is a giant flat alphabetical list of absolutely everything to go to if the semantic location can't be found and/or a search type-in that auto-fills as typed to find anything.

It's a horizontal or vertical (depending on the orientation of your panel) line at the front of the Window Buttons plugin. Try turning it on and off in the properties and keeping an eye on the plugin - you should see it flash on and off.

That would be an interesting project.

i can't find where to do that.  here are 2K HD+ (1920x1080) screenshots of menus i see:

"Show handle" is checked (in the last one) but i see nothing particular and no flashing.  check and uncheck changes nothing i can see.

Yes, it is Show Handle. Perhaps the theme you are using has it colored the same as the background.

Here is the Window Buttons (tasklist) plugin on Arc-Dark. Note the 3 dashed lines to the far left before the first icon. That is the handle.

Re: window names across the panel [SOLVED]

it's almost the same color.  but, once i magnify the display, i can see it.  it's just to the right of the whisker tab on my panel layout.

Re: window names across the panel [SOLVED]

the drag and drop does not always work when dragging windows tabs to the right.  but it does when dragging to the left.  the way it should be implemented is during the drag tabs should automatically move to open the drop location.  then the user can see where the tab being moved will go to.  that's my suggestion for the future.  it will require some re-implementation work.  perhaps the way to do it is just moving it as dragged and update the tabs in the display as the mouse is moved.
