[SOLVED] Thunar "folder properties" window too big and not risezable.

Hi,

In Thunar right click on a file or folder > properties the window is fare too large and can only be resized on the height but not on the width (which takes 3/4 of the width).

It's happening only on one of my three computers and I can't find the reason why. Trying to move it back results in stuttering mouse like blocked by a minimal given dimension !

Some help would be nice.

Thanks.

You are using Archlinux, correct?

Is there anything different among your computers regarding the screen dimensions? Does the problematic computer have a lower resolution?

The default dialog window size is 400x450. Is your dialog opening at that size?

Can you post a screenshot of the dialog, including all the content in each of the tabs?

Hi ToZ,

Arch right.

Screen dimensions are all different, desktop = 27" 2560x1440 DPI 109, laptop1 15.4" = 1920x1080 (half of the native resolution) DPI 142, problematic laptop 12.5" 1920x1080 DPI 177.

Here is the window on the desktop :

1640700854.png

I have to move to the problematic laptop to post the screenshot, just few minutes...

Edit : The screenshot of the problematic laptop :

1640701545.png

From the same folder.

Hmmm. Can you try changing to use the builit-in Adwaita GTK theme and see if you can replicate the problem:

xfconf-query -c xsettings -p /Net/ThemeName -s ""

Also, try running thunar from a terminal:

thunar -q
thunar

...and open the properties dialog. Do you get any messages to appear in the terminal?

I tried with Adwaita and thunar from the terminal but nothing changed and no message from the terminal.

Is there any way to find/change the thunar default dialog window size trough a .conf file ?

It's hard coded to a default size of 450x400, but can change size depending on the widgets in the dialog.

What if you created a secondary test account on your computer and see if you can replicate the issue there? Maybe its just something with your profile.

But how can that thing be hard coded and still be moved or not going back to the default size ? Some file must dictate the behavior, isn't 'it ?

Its the initial default size, so it "should" open at 400x450 (but GTK can change this if to fit the existing content, it needs to make the dialog bigger). It can be resized because thunar allows it to be resized. But as far as I can tell, I don't see the dialog size being saved anywhere. So something is happening on your system where GTK is determining that the dialog needs to be as large as it is.

Does the same happen with a secondary test account on the problematic laptop?
Do you have any content in ~/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css that might expand the size of dialog windows (or any of the elements contained within it)?

Re: [SOLVED] Thunar "folder properties" window too big and not risezable.

I've tried with a test account and the dialog window behaves normally, so it has to do with my own profile.

Anyway, it doesn't help about where that weird behavior comes from in my profile...

I have nothing related to the windows size in my .config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css.

I took a look in .config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/thunar.xml and other places without any dialog windows dimensions related. I don't see where to find the culpit.

Try re-naming this file to gtk.css.bak and logging out and back in again to see if the problem persists. You can rename it back once the test is complete.

Re: [SOLVED] Thunar "folder properties" window too big and not risezable.

Bingo ToZ !

I don't really understand why because there is nothing related to any window size in .config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css but doing your suggestion in #10 has turned back the default behavior.

Thanks a lot.

Just to show the .css content :

* {
-XfcePanelWindow-popup-delay: 800;
-XfcePanelWindow-popdown-delay: 10;
-XfcePanelWindow-autohide-size: 1;
}

XfdesktopIconView.view {
    -XfdesktopIconView-label-alpha:0;
    -XfdesktopIconView-selected-label-alpha:0;
    -XfdesktopIconView-ellipsize-icon-labels:0;
    -XfdesktopIconView-tooltip-size:128;
    -XfdesktopIconView-cell-spacing:-5;
    -XfdesktopIconView-cell-padding:25;
    -XfdesktopIconView-cell-text-width-proportion:3.3;
}

XfdesktopIconView.view {
  border-radius: 2px;
  background: transparent;
  color: #444755;
  text-shadow: none;
}

XfdesktopIconView.label:active, XfdesktopIconView.label:checked {
  background-color: transparent;
  color: #8BAEE8;
  text-shadow: none;
}

.thunar .sidebar .view { background-color: grey; }

You're right. There is nothing in that content that should affect dialog size.

Can you try adding each section back in, one at a time, to see if you could identify which block is doing that?

Sorry for the late reply !

I just renamed the .css to gtk.css and everything was fine without any complain.
