2k monitor doesn't stay asleep

hello all, and happy 2022.

I was grateful enough to upgrade my 1080p monitor (it died) to a 2k monitor. usually this is not an issue, but I can't figure it out.

I've tried 2 different manufacturers of monitors (sceptre and currently msi). the problem is, the monitor won't stay asleep, where with the exact same settings and exact same DP cable a 1080p monitor will stay asleep.

I noticed under display settings where you set your resolution, some resolutions have an * by them, while others do not, what does the asterisk mean?

has anyone else seen this?
