Thunar allows quick-search for files and directories. It's invoked by simply typing in letters. A textbox appears in bottom right.
Is there a setting that enables this behavior for Desktop?

Remember to edit the subject of your topic to include the [SOLVED] tag once you're satisfied with the answers or have found a solution (in which case, don't forget to share it as well), so that other members of the community can quickly refer to it and save their time. Pretty please!

I don't believe so. You could use something like the appfinder with custom actions to perform catfish searches.
BTW, the thunar search function is being enhanced in the next version. See: https://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?id=15312

Well, that's a shame.
Did it at least work before or am I having a Mandela effect?

I believe it did at one point (or at least I remember it as well) but then GTK changed something (IIRC)
Sorry, no Mandela effect here (it was also always Berenstain Bears as far as I remember - I read those books to my kids all the time. I make my stand here). Though I do remember Rick Ocasek dying in the 80s. I loved The Cars and was really bummed when he died. Or supposedly died.

This feature appears to be functional in Xubuntu 22.04, which uses Thunar 4.16.10, though without the text box.
