Thunar "Open with Neovim" runs xfce4-terminal instead of default term

I have st installed (this fork of it) and set it to the default terminal under the Utilities tab in Default Applications (xfce4-mime-settings). St opens when doing Ctrl+Alt+T and "Open Terminal Here", but in Thunar if I right click a file and select neovim or htop under "Open with" it will open those programs under xfce4-terminal. If I click "Open with other application.." and make neovim the default, then double clicking on the file opens it in neovim, inside xfce4-terminal. If I open neovim and htop from the start menu, they open in st. Is there any way to have thunar open files in neovim using st? I'm using arch btw big_smile

Uninstalled xfce4-terminal and now when I open files in thunar with neovim, neovim launches in xterm instead... Anyone know a solution for this?

What are the contents of neovim's .desktop file (usually in /usr/share/applications)?
Do you have a .desktop file for st? If so, can you share it's contents?
Can you post the contents of ~/.config/xfce4/helpers.rc?

Also, which distro and which version of Xfce are you running?

st doesn't have a .desktop, but my new default terminal "Alacritty" does, so I'll also include its .desktop. I'm using Arch Linux (Kernel: 5.16.10-arch1-1) with XFCE 4.16 and these AUR packages:

xfce4-panel-profiles

What version of xdg-utils do you have installed?

What happens if you run:

exo-open --launch=TerminalEmulator

... does alacritty launch? And:

exo-open --launch=TerminalEmulator nvim

...does alacritty launch and execute neovim?

$ pacman -Qi xdg-utils|grep Version
Version         : 1.1.3+19+g9816ebb-1

"exo-open --launch=TerminalEmulator" launches alacritty without any errors. However when I run "exo-open --launch=TerminalEmulator nvim" I get this output, and an popup:

$ exo-open --launch=TerminalEmulator nvim
$ error: Found argument 'nvim' which wasn't expected, or isn't valid in this context

USAGE:
    alacritty [FLAGS] [OPTIONS] [SUBCOMMAND]

What is the output of?

command -v which

I ask this because I had the same error appear on launching Firefox: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2471296

For some reason, which decided to remove itself. Reinstalling the debianutils package solved the problem.

alacritty requires parameter key to be specified. Edit the ~/.local/share/xfce4/helpers/custom-TerminalEmulator.desktop file and on the "X-XFCE-CommandsWithParameter=" line make sure there is an "-e" after alacritty and before the %s:

X-XFCE-CommandsWithParameter=alacritty -e "%s"

There is an existing enhancement request do this automatically for other terminal applications.

Thanks, now I can run "exo-open --launch=TerminalEmulator nvim" with no errors, although "Open with Neovim" still uses xterm instead of Alacritty.
