xfwm4 not loading when autologin enabled

Installed Debian 11.2.0 on an old 32bit machine and would like to use xfce but ran into the problem that it doesn't appear to load xfwm4 after enabling autologin.

When it hasn't started after autologin, I can start xfwm4 and it works okay for the session. I can save a new default session but after rebooting the pc, I mostly end up without window controls again, i.e. xfwm4 appears to load sometimes but usually it doesn't when autologin is enabled.

No problems without autologin. Any hints what may cause this problem?

What does your ~/.xsession-errors log file say after an unsuccessful autologin attempt?

My apologies, I may not have described the problem sufficiently.

Autologin does work, but when autologin is enabled xfwm4 does not load in most cases. I.e. the applications saved in the session open but their windows do not have frames and controls.

I repeated this over and over but xfwm4 only loaded in about 1 out of 5 attempts when autologin is enabled.
When autologin is disabled, xfwm4 works consistently.

"unsuccessful autologin attempt" was a poor choice of words. Apologies. I meant during the autologin sequence when xfwm4 didn't start up (I'm guessing it crashed). Lets see whats in the log file to see if we can identify the problem.

Thank you. The threat to look at the error log must have been enough to fix it as I could not get it reoccur today.
It may be related to running updates last night before shutting down.
Will post the contents of .xsession-errors if it reoccurs over the next few days.
