I'm a novice linux user and I've experienced a problem for a few days. When I clicked a torrent link transmission used to open the file, but now my system downloads the file to pictures. Also, when there was a downloadable video link in a gmail message, when I clicked on it it would suggest opening it with my media player, but now it also downloads it. What could be the problem? I didn't do anything about file associations (I think.) Is this sth fixable? Thanks to all.
I'm using Xubuntu 20.04 and xfce 4.14

I don't have a Xubuntu 20.04 system readily available to check, but if you launch the "Settings Manager" there should be a "Mime Type Editor" applet there (or it might be a tab in the "Preferred Applications" applet). Search for both ".torrent" and ".magnet" types and ensure they point to transmission in the Default Application column. You can click on the entry in that column to change it if you need to.

What are you using for your email client? It might have some settings that you need to change. If its from within a browser, look at that browser's default applications settings to make sure the proper application is being used.

I checked the MIME Type editor, I have neither .torrent nor .magnet there. There's only application/x-bittorrent and the default app is Transmission. The status shows "User set" but I don't know how I did it. (Sorry, I'm a 50 year-old teacher and very new to Linux )
I use Firefox for gmail.

In a terminal window, go to your Pictures directory and run the following command:
xdg-mime query filetype <FILENAME>
...where <FILENAME> is the full name of the torrent/magnet file that was downloaded.
For the email issue, in firefox, go to Settings > General > Applications (I believe) and search for video ad see what action is assigned to it. Here is some more info on how to do that.

I did, and the terminal says "xdg-mime: file <FILENAME> does not exist"

Sorry I think I forgot to write the extension (.torrent) now it says application/x-bittorrent

What does the following return?
xdg-mime query default application/x-bittorrent

Editing Applications > Settings > Default Applications > Others > application/x-bittorrent to Transmission doesn't help?
Btw I find it interesting I kept reading people having issues with Transmission lately.
edit: Never mind I misread.

I got transmission-gtk.desktop.
btw I did some search but realised that most of the language used requires more knowledge about xfce. (started reading). Could this be a problem caused by the Thunar file manager? (just a guess)

Okay, this looks like a change that Firefox made on purpose. See: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/ma … loads-menu
Here is a way to make it work again.
Click on a torrent file and firefox downloads it
Click on the downloads button in the toolbar, right-click the torrent file that was just loaded, and select the "Always open similar files" option. This will open this file and all other .torrent files in transmission
To check, go to Settings and scroll down to the "applications" section - you should see Bittorrent seed file" added to the list with the action set to open in Transmission\
Do the same with the video link.

I did and it works! Thank you so much. for your help. At first I blamed Tunar but it was Firefox, as you said.
