display won't stay blank (or sleep)

hello

debian stable here (xfce4 4.16) with external display

so the display goes blank (or sleep) but it wakes up almost immediately (like 2-4 seconds) and so it never goes blank kind of

the lock screen or lightdm prompt go blank just fine (and stay blank!)

here are my settings:

i tried with and without power management (just blank), with and without blank (just sleep) and it's always the same, it goes blank and wakes up

any clue what i could check ?

also, not sure if related, i disabled the suspend and hibernate like there https://wiki.debian.org/Suspend#Disable … ibernation

gpu is amd apu 5700g, kernel is backport 5.16 (did not work either with stable 5.10)

Re: display won't stay blank (or sleep)

Hello and welcome.

Can we see xfce4-power-manager logs over the time period where the sleep and awake events happen?

xfce4-power-manager -q
xfce4-power-manager --no-daemon --debug

In the output that you post back - indicate at what point the monitor fell asleep and when it re-awoke.

Re: display won't stay blank (or sleep)

What does your display configuration look like in Xfce (the Displays setting module):

xfconf-query -c displays -lv

There is an option there in the Display Settings, on the options tab, to do something when displays are connected. Curios to see what it is set at.

Edit: Also, what make and model of monitor is it? Does it have an internal setting for auto-detection or auto-switch or something like that?

it's this one, AOC - I220SWH, https://shop.hardware.fr/fiche/AR201712010110.html (it does not have a page on the maker site anymore)

it has an "off timer" setting, set to 0, changing it to 1 does nothing afait

BUT it has an "input select" setting, set to auto and if i switch it to hdmi instead then it stays blank when it blanks/sleeps

so i guess xfce wakes up when the display switches to the other input and back or something

Yes, this is what I was thinking, but I'm not sure it's Xfce that is recognizing this but something within Xorg and Xfce just reacting to it.

Re: display won't stay blank (or sleep)

so i just changed my monitor (logistic reasons, nothing related to this issue)

for this one: https://shop.hardware.fr/fiche/AR201802190033.html / https://www.asus.com/Displays-Desktops/ … e/VZ279HE/ which has 3 inputs

and the problem is back, exactly the same behavior (blank then wake up)

except this time the monitor does not have an auto setting that i could disable

does that mean that ANY monitor with multiple input create the same issue?

Re: display won't stay blank (or sleep)

i tested some manual blanking as explained here https://shallowsky.com/linux/x-screen-blanking.html (i know nothing about any of this)

with the xset command

they all behave exactly the same: once the monitor is blanked, it tells there is no signal (and you can imagine it tries another input - as those monitors usually do when one input has no signal) and it wakes up

so being tested with xset it seems more of an xorg problem than xfce

but i can't be the first to report that problem

also as said before, the lock screen feature and the lightdm blanking both works fine (and stay blank)

For that monitor, try turning off/disabling DDC/CI in the OSD Setup menu to see if that helps.

Edit: This looks relevant.

it actually does not work (i had big hopes since it seemed a bit of an extreme solution)

yep and this commit seems interesting too https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/ … te_1377275

i'll try to continue my investigation there

thanks
