Having problems shutting down xfce's panels

Hello there everyone!

Xubu 22.04

I'm trying to replace the xubu-included system trayl with tint2's but tint isn't showing the system tray at all. I've done some research and from what I understand, although the included panel is no longer being used, xfce4's panel is still grabbing control of the system tray(I think); source.

Could someone help me sort the issue so tint2 will begin showing the system tray? I have looked in Session~>Session and Startup and don't see anything having to do with *panel that's starting up. Other things I've tried is purging xfce4-panel(not found) but nothing I've tried has worked.

Thanks for your time!

Re: Having problems shutting down xfce's panels

I should probably share a screenshot of what I'm talking about.  I'd like the system tray at the upper right beside the power control.

This is what I hope to have(Debian/Openbox/TInt2):

This is what xubu shows with Tint2:

Re: Having problems shutting down xfce's panels

xfce4-panel must still somehow be running. What happens when you manually run tint2 from the terminal? What messages do you get?

The general process to replace xfce4-panel with another panel is:

  1. With xfce4-panel running, go to Settings Manager > Session and Startup > Current Session and in the "Restart" column for xfce4-panel, click on the word "Immediately" and select "Never"

  2. Click on "Save Session"

  3. On the Application Autostart tab and create an entry for tint2 to run on login.

  4. Restart the computer

If you have uninstalled the panel, then you shouldn't have this issue. Do you have another panel running? Perhaps posting your ~/.xsession-errors log file after a fresh login might shed some light on the issue.

Unless I'm misunderstanding which package should be running, I don't see it:

Does the panel show as running in this?

Re: Having problems shutting down xfce's panels

Its not listed there because its not running. In which case, its really odd that tint2 doesn't show the systray. Can you post back:
- the output of when you manually run tint2 in a terminal window
- the contents of ~/.xsession-errors on a fresh login.

Re: Having problems shutting down xfce's panels

From your tint2 startup log:

tint2: systray window 48234509
tint2: systray started

...so systray was started. Consider what the log file looks like when xfce4-panel is running (from my test system):

tint2: another systray is running, cannot use systray

Which leads to the question, do you have any applications running that support systray? e.g. nm-applet?

I'm not that familiar with tint2, but you have a few missing icons errors in your .xsession-errors log file. Is it possible that the applets are loading but are invisible because the icons can't be loaded?

** (process:1523): WARNING **: 19:31:35.713: unable to launch: Failed to execute child process “/home/schwim/.config/jgmenu/startup” (Permission denied)

Not related to the problem, but check the permissions on this file.

Edit: Here is the tint2 output with nm-applet running on my system:

tint2: systray window 18874384
tint2: systray started
add_icon: 48234511 (Network), pid 1242, visual 0x56107df22b20, colormap 32, depth 24, width 1, height 1

I'm not that familiar with tint2, but you have a few missing icons errors in your .xsession-errors log file. Is it possible that the applets are loading but are invisible because the icons can't be loaded?

This strikes me as odd.  I have the icon theme added to the desktop via the included xfce appearance app, I see them in my ,icons folder and when it says "Icon path not found in cache: theme = Desert-Dark-Icons, icon = /home/schwim/.icons/xfce-mouse.png, size = 0"  , that's a path I explicitly set in the tint config file, I don't know what it means by not being found in the cache.

** (process:1523): WARNING **: 19:31:35.713: unable to launch: Failed to execute child process “/home/schwim/.config/jgmenu/startup” (Permission denied)

Not related to the problem, but check the permissions on this file.

I've fixed this.  It seems that any time I move files via a service like mega, it defaults to unusable permissions.

Re: Having problems shutting down xfce's panels

Try this is a test.

First, create the source file test.py with the following content:

import gtk

icon = gtk.StatusIcon()
icon.set_from_stock(gtk.STOCK_ABOUT)

gtk.main()

Then quit/kill tint2 and start it manually from the terminal.

Finally, run the above app:

python test.py

...and note the output on the terminal window. Does an "about" icon display in the systray area?

Re: Having problems shutting down xfce's panels

I see python 2 isn't installed. Okay lets try test.py with python 3 code instead:

import gi
gi.require_version('Gtk', '3.0')
from gi.repository import Gtk

icon = Gtk.StatusIcon()
icon.set_from_icon_name("xubuntu-logo")

Gtk.main()

...and repeat the test.

Here's what I get from killing and restarting tint2 then running the test script:

schwim@schwim-vm-xubu2204:~/.scripts$ python3 test.py
/home/schwim/.scripts/test.py:6: DeprecationWarning: Gtk.StatusIcon.set_from_icon_name is deprecated

Re: Having problems shutting down xfce's panels

What about the tint2 output? Did the xubuntu logo show up on tint?

Sorry about that, I forgot that part.  The logo does show up on the far right, beside the power icon:

Re: Having problems shutting down xfce's panels

So in that case, tint2's systray is working fine. Now that we have confirmed that, what is your expectation that tint2 will be displaying in it's systray?

My hope was to have it show the same things my tint2 on my deb install and the xfce default bar shows, running apps(like MEGA), network and audio.  In both vanilla xubu using the stock task bar and in my openbox install with Tint2, it shows any apps I start up that have a tray icon available.

Re: Having problems shutting down xfce's panels

For a network applet, you could run "nm-applet".
For audio, you will need to find a systray audio/volume app like volumeicon or volctl.

Xfce has it's own pulseaudio-plugin but it requires xfce4-panel to run.
Most distro's ship nm-applet as the networking applet.

I'm unsure about mega as I've never used it, but if it has systray support, it should work - assuming you're starting the applet somehow.

But these are really tint2 questions, not really Xfce questions any more.

Edit: tint2 has a wiki page dedicated to third party applets.

Re: Having problems shutting down xfce's panels

Thank you for your time and all your help.  I doubt I'll ever figure out why it only doesn't work in my XFCE install, I would bet it has something to do with changes I made after install to get to this point with Tint2.  I imagine I'll just learn to live without the tray.

Thanks again!
