"None of the screen lock tools ran successfully..."

Error message:

"None of the screen lock tools ran successully, the screen will not be locked. Do you still want to continue to suspend the system? Yes/No."

I'm able to suspend the system manually with no problems. Thanks.

xfce 4.12, XScreenSaver 6.02.

Re: "None of the screen lock tools ran successfully..."

That is  because xscreensaver doesn't come with a "lock()" dbus method. More info at this bug report.

Re: "None of the screen lock tools ran successfully..."

Are there any workarounds, beyond manually suspending via Whisker menu? Are there options beyond xscreensaver, or are you stuck with it if you use X11? Thanks.

There's a panel plugin called Action Buttons that offers a software power button. It's customizable, of course. You can also right-click on any of your panels and select Log Out…. This will display a logout dialog, where you can select one from many of the predefined actions. Power Manager allows you to define action for when your hardware power button is pressed (first item in the following screenshot):

There's xfce4-screensaver native to Xfce. There's also gnome-screensaver but I wouldn't really recommend it as it lacks many features.

The documentation gives a brief answer to this.

Make sure you have it installed, though. Look for a package named xfce4-screensaver in the repositories of your distribution.

Regrettably xfce4-screensaver is full of bugs, which can expose your information via an unlocked laptop, or via displaying what you had open at the time of locking.  It's also really buggy in terms of getting back into your machine when you want to.

Observations over the last 9 year of using XFCE suggest the project does not take physical security seriously. This has been broken for years. I only use XFCE on a desktop. It is not safe to use on a laptop.

I use xfce4-screensaver regularly on a laptop and have never seen or experienced this issue.
- what is the ID of the bug report you created?
- have you tried other screensavers and if so, do they work?
