Hello world
Computer Lenovo x200s (very old machine)
Linux Fedora 35
Desktops xfce and mate (light desktops for old computers)
I have the following Problem. On a wake up from standby, the desktop gets black and all icons are lost.
I have to run the command "xfdesktop" to restart it.
Any idea to make it better ?
Bye

Hello and welcome.
Which version of Xfce and xfdesktop are you running?
Is there anything in your logs about xfdesktop crashing during the suspend/resume cycle? If not, try this in a terminal window:
xfdesktop -Q && xfdesktop -e
...and do a suspend/resume cycle. On resume, post the output from the terminal window.
Please remember to mark your thread [SOLVED] to make it easier for others to find

There is nothing in either of those logs to indicate an xfdesktop crash. Is there maybe something in the journal:
journalctl | grep xfdesktop
Also, what video card and driver do you have/are you using?

There is a likelihood that you don't have enough swap to power on from hibernate. Could you also run
xfconf-query --channel xfce4-desktop --list --verbose
after waking up from hibernate?

Yes it does not crash every time, I will post again on next crash the result of

Hello
I had the swap problem months ago, this was easy to solve because the computer said something like " not enough disk space for deep sleep"
The problem is with suspend to memory, usualy I just fold the screen down and in some situations it will not restart well.
First I loose the desktop, then if I do not restart the desktop on many wake up,I will loose the X to close an active window and the top bar with the application menu.
xfconf-query --channel xfce4-desktop --list --verbose
gives
[jean@fedora ~]$ xfconf-query --channel xfce4-desktop --list --verbose

Suspend to memory could also malfunction if there isn't enough of it. Could you please share the output of the following command?
lshw -C memory
Also, try running the aforementioned xfconf-query command when there are irregularities after waking up. Listing some, or ideally all, of the symptoms would be of tremendous help in determining the exact cause.

Yeah, 2 gigs of RAM may not be enough. What kind of programs do you usually use before suspending your system?

hello
It is a small machine used to travel. It is mainly web activity, the heavier activity is Netflix or other video websites.

I see.
I have two suggestions:
Install earlyoom and configure it. Next, make sure you have zswap enabled and configured. In my /etc/default/grub, I set it to the following parameters:
swapaccount=1 zswap.enabled=1 zswap.max_pool_percent=30 zswap.accept_threshold_percent=80
Obviously, you are going to have to read some guides and tweak the numbers and maybe even enable other parameters.
If they partly solve your problem, consider adding another memory module. This would be the most optimal and long-term solution.
Note that the first option won't magically fix everything. 2 gigs is still an insufficient amount and it's best to increase it up to at least 4 anyway.
Anything else is out of Xfce's scope.
